Cutting List

A cutting list itemizes every individual piece a project needs -- part name, quantity, final length/width/thickness, and often the material and grain orientation -- converted from a design or drawing into the concrete list of cuts that actually need to happen at the saw. A well-organized cutting list also groups and sequences cuts sensibly (all the same-width rips together, for instance) rather than jumping around, since resetting a fence or blade height repeatedly wastes time and invites setup errors compared to batching similar cuts together.

Working from a real cutting list, checked off piece by piece, is what keeps a project from the classic mistake of cutting a piece to the wrong final dimension because it was measured off the drawing freehand in the moment instead of from a list prepared in advance.
