Dry Time vs. Cure Time

Dry time and cure time are two different, often confused clocks on the same finish. Dry time is how long until a finish is safe to touch, recoat, or handle without marring -- often just hours. Cure time is how long until the finish has fully hardened and reached its actual final durability, water resistance, and hardness -- frequently measured in days or weeks, well after the surface already feels dry to the touch.

The practical mistake this distinction prevents: a tabletop that feels perfectly dry to the touch a day after finishing can still be well short of its actual cured hardness, and setting something heavy or hot on it, or giving it a hard scrub, before full cure time has passed risks marking or damaging a finish that hasn't yet reached the durability its spec sheet describes.
