Horsepower (Motor Rating)

Horsepower (HP) is a traditional unit of power output, still the standard spec quoted on most stationary and benchtop woodworking machine motors -- table saws, planers, jointers, dust collectors -- even though many newer tools list amperage or watts instead or alongside it. Broadly, more horsepower means a motor can push harder through denser material or a wider/deeper cut without bogging down, relevant for anyone regularly working hardwoods or making heavy cuts.

Worth knowing before comparing spec sheets: "peak" or "developed" horsepower ratings, common on marketing materials for smaller benchtop and hobbyist tools, are measured under conditions that inflate the number well above what the motor can sustain under real, continuous load -- a stated rating from a manufacturer known for straightforward continuous-duty ratings is a more honest number to compare against than an unusually high peak-horsepower claim on a similarly priced tool.
