Knockdown (KD) Furniture

Knockdown (KD) furniture is designed to be assembled, disassembled, and reassembled repeatedly using mechanical fasteners -- cam locks, threaded inserts and bolts, knockdown fittings -- rather than glued joints meant to be permanent. It's the engineering category behind flat-pack furniture generally, built specifically so a piece can ship flat, get assembled at home, and survive being taken apart again for a future move without the joints degrading the way a repeatedly-stressed glued joint would.

Designing genuinely good knockdown furniture is a real discipline in its own right -- the fasteners need to draw the joint up tight and stay tight through repeated cycles, which is a different design problem than a one-time-glued joint only ever needs to solve once.
