Offcut

An offcut is the leftover piece remaining after a cut -- the shorter end trimmed off a board to bring it to final length, the strip ripped away to bring a panel to final width. Whether an offcut is scrap or usable material depends entirely on size and species: a large offcut from an expensive hardwood is routinely set aside for the next small part, box, or shop jig that comes along, while a thin sliver offcut genuinely is waste. Most shops keep some kind of offcut bin specifically because "too small to use" turns out to be a smaller category than it first seems.
