Rip Cut

A rip cut runs along a board's length, parallel to the grain, typically changing its width rather than its length. It's the counterpart to a crosscut (cutting across the grain, changing length), and the two together cover essentially every straight cut in woodworking. A table saw's rip fence is built specifically for this, guiding a board through the blade at a fixed, repeatable width.
