Template

A template is a master pattern -- usually plywood or hardboard, cut and smoothed to the exact shape wanted -- that a router bit with a guide bearing follows, transferring the template's shape onto a workpiece. It's the standard way to reproduce an identical curved or irregular shape multiple times, or to cut a shape more accurately than could be managed freehand: get the template right once, and every piece routed against it comes out the same.
