Belt Sander

A belt sander drives a continuous loop of abrasive over two rollers at speed, and it removes wood faster than any other handheld sander by a wide margin. That speed is the whole point and also the whole risk — a belt sander will happily sand a visible low spot into a panel in the time it takes to get distracted.

What it's actually for

Stock removal and leveling: flattening a glued-up panel where the joints aren't perfectly flush, knocking down rough-sawn lumber before finer tools take over, or removing material fast when precision isn't yet the priority. It is not a finishing tool — its coarse, aggressive cut leaves scratch patterns a random orbital sander should be the one to remove.

Belt size and what it means

3"x21" is the most common size for handheld belt sanders and covers most shop needs. Larger belts (4"x24" and up) remove material faster but come in a bigger, heavier tool that's harder to control precisely — a real tradeoff, not a straightforward upgrade.

What actually separates a good one

• A flat, rigid platen — a soft or worn platen lets the belt dip, which is exactly how you sand a wave into a workpiece without meaning to.
• Variable speed — slower speeds give more control on softer woods or when you're closing in on a line.
• Belt tracking adjustment that holds its setting — a belt that wanders off-center will chew the edge of your platen and your workpiece both.
• Dust collection — belt sanders generate dust fast; a bag alone won't keep up the way a vacuum hookup will.

Technique matters more here than on almost any other sander

Keep the sander moving at all times once it contacts the workpiece — stopping or lingering in one spot, even briefly, is the single most common way people gouge a visible dip into a panel. Work with the grain where possible, and let the tool's own weight do the pressing; leaning into it just digs the belt in faster and less predictably.
