Pocket Hole Joinery
Pocket hole joinery joins two pieces of wood with an angled screw driven through a stepped, pre-drilled hole in one piece into the face or edge of the other, pulling the joint tight as it seats. Where it earns its place
Pocket screws aren't a substitute for a mortise-and-tenon or a dovetail where the joint itself is part of the design. Where it does earn its place is anywhere function matters more than showing off the joinery: face frames, cabinet carcasses, shop furniture, jigs, and apron-to-leg attachments on furniture where the joint sits on a hidden inside face. For a beginner, it's also a legitimate way to get square, strong assemblies together while still building skills elsewhere in a project.
Screw count and spacing
A single pocket screw resists being pulled straight apart but does very little to resist racking (the joint twisting out of square). Two screws, spaced as far apart as the joint width reasonably allows, resist racking far better than one — this is the default for any joint wider than about 1.5", with a single screw reserved for narrow stock where there's no room for a second hole without them crowding each other.
Grain direction and clamping
Pocket screws pull the joint together as they drive, which is exactly the problem during assembly: that pulling force wants to slide the piece out of alignment right as the screw seats. Clamp the joint in position before driving, don't rely on the screw to do the aligning — a joint that shifted half a screw's width out of flush is a common, entirely avoidable pocket-hole mistake. Glue is optional (the screw alone holds well), but adding it closes the joint line and adds meaningful long-term strength, particularly on stock that will see repeated stress like drawer boxes or shop fixtures.
When to skip it
Anywhere the joint will be visible on a show face, anywhere the assembly will be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly (the self-tapping threads don't love being backed out and redriven into the same hole), and anywhere the material is too thin for the jig's minimum thickness setting — thin stock is the fastest way to blow a screw through the opposite face.
