Spline Joinery
Spline joinery reinforces a joint by cutting a slot across the seam in both mating pieces and gluing in a thin strip of wood (the spline) that bridges the two, adding real long-grain glue surface and mechanical resistance exactly where the joint would otherwise rely on a weak glue line alone. It's less a joint of its own and more the standard answer to "how do I actually reinforce this."
The problem it solves
A miter joint is the clearest example: it looks seamless because no end grain shows, but it has no mechanical interlock at all, so the whole connection depends on a glue bond that's often not enough on its own for anything beyond a small picture frame. A spline let into a slot cut straight across the mitered seam gives the joint real long-grain surface and a physical piece of wood resisting the two halves pulling apart — turning a fragile joint into a genuinely trustworthy one.
Cutting the joint
A table saw with a spline jig (a shop-made sled that holds the assembled, mitered corner at the correct angle against the blade) cuts a slot straight across the seam in one pass — the corner has to be glued and assembled first, so the slot lands exactly on the joint line. A router with a straight bit and a similar jig works the same way, and is often the more controllable option on smaller frames.
Splines as a design element
Because a spline shows on the finished piece (it sits right at the joint line, visible from the outside), it's common to deliberately choose a contrasting species for the spline rather than trying to hide it — a dark spline on a light-wood frame reads as an intentional detail instead of a repair. This is a genuine design choice available almost nowhere else in furniture joinery: reinforcement that also looks good.
Spline vs. a full-width groove
A spline across a whole joint's face is a related but different idea from a tongue and groove joint, which runs the length of an edge rather than crossing a single seam — a tongue and groove is a joinery method in its own right for edge-to-edge panel work, while a spline is specifically a targeted reinforcement added to an existing, otherwise-complete joint.
