Contact Adhesive

Contact adhesive is applied to both surfaces being joined and allowed to dry to a tacky, non-wet state before the two pieces are brought together -- unlike wood glue, which is applied wet to one surface and needs sustained clamping pressure while it cures. Once the two contact-adhesive-coated surfaces touch, they bond essentially instantly and permanently, with no clamping time needed (and, once contact is made, essentially no ability to reposition either).

That instant, unforgiving bond is exactly why it's the standard adhesive for applying plastic laminate (like Formica) to a substrate -- laminate can't be effectively clamped across its whole surface the way a glued wood joint can, and contact adhesive's whole-surface bond on contact solves that problem, at the cost of needing careful, correct alignment on the first and only try.
