Biscuit

A biscuit is a small, football-shaped wafer of compressed wood, glued into matching crescent-shaped slots cut into two mating pieces with a biscuit joiner. Moisture in the glue swells the compressed wood slightly once inside the slot, tightening the joint as it cures. See Biscuit Joinery for how and where it's actually used.
