Biscuit Joinery

Biscuit joinery uses a dedicated biscuit joiner to cut matching crescent-shaped slots into two mating pieces, then glues a football-shaped, compressed-wood "biscuit" into both slots to join them. Water in the glue swells the compressed biscuit slightly inside the slot, tightening the fit as it cures.
What it's actually good at
Biscuits add some glue surface and a bit of shear strength, but their real job is alignment: registering two panels or an edge-glued joint so the faces land flush during glue-up, when clamping pressure alone would happily let boards slide out of alignment. For a wide panel glued up from several boards, biscuits spaced along each joint keep everything registered while the clamps go on — genuinely useful, even though the biscuits themselves aren't adding dramatic strength to the finished glue-up.
Where it's used
Panel glue-ups (see edge gluing), case construction where a shelf or divider meets a side panel, and miter corners on frames where a biscuit adds both alignment and a bit of extra glue surface across an otherwise weak miter joint. It's a fast, forgiving option anywhere the main goal is keeping things lined up rather than building a showcase structural joint.
Cutting the joint
A biscuit joiner (sometimes called a plate joiner) has a small retractable circular blade that plunges into the workpiece to cut the crescent slot in one motion — align the tool's registration marks with layout marks on the workpiece, plunge, and the slot is cut. Both mating pieces get a matching slot in the same location, glue goes into the slots and biscuit, and the joint is assembled and clamped like any glued joint.
Biscuits vs. dowels vs. Dominos
All three — biscuits, dowels, and the Festool Domino's loose tenons — solve the same basic problem (a mechanical connector inside two mating pieces) with different tradeoffs: biscuits are fastest and best for alignment but add the least raw strength; dowels are stronger and cheaper per joint but slower to align accurately by hand; Dominos are the strongest and fastest of the three but require the most expensive tool. Which one to reach for is mostly about how much strength the joint actually needs versus how fast the project needs to move.
