Routing

Routing is cutting with a router -- a high-speed spinning bit shapes an edge profile, cuts a groove or dado, trims one material flush to another, or follows a template, depending entirely on which bit is chambered and how the tool is guided. The bit does the cutting; the router's job is spinning it fast and controlling exactly where it travels, whether handheld, mounted in a table, or guided by a jig.
