Half-Lap Joint

A half-lap joint removes half the material's thickness from each of two overlapping boards, so when they're joined the two half-thickness sections nest together and the result sits flush — the same total thickness as either board on its own, not doubled up the way a plain overlap would be. It shows up in frames, stretchers, and anywhere two pieces need to cross or meet at a corner without adding bulk.

Where it's used

Corner half-laps join a frame's rails and stiles at a right angle; cross half-laps join two pieces that cross in the middle of their length, like a shop stand's stretchers; and edge (or "middle") half-laps extend a board's length by overlapping two pieces along their run. All three are the same core cut, just positioned differently on the workpiece.

Why it's genuinely strong

A half-lap's glue surface is entirely long-grain-to-long-grain — the same reason edge gluing a panel bonds so well — combined with real mechanical overlap that resists twisting in a way a flat butt joint can't. It's not as strong as a mortise and tenon for resisting a joint being pulled straight apart, but for a frame that mostly needs to resist racking and twisting, a half-lap is plenty and considerably faster to cut.

Cutting the joint

A dado stack on a table saw, taken in repeated passes across the material's width, is the standard shop method — cut to half the material's depth, then remove the waste between the outer cuts. A router with a straight bit and a fence or template works just as well and is easier to control on wider stock. Either way, the goal is a flat-bottomed recess at exactly half the material's thickness, checked with the mating piece rather than trusted to a single measurement.

The half-depth is the whole joint

Every half-lap's fit depends on both recesses actually being half the material's thickness — cut one side a hair deep and the other a hair shallow and the assembled joint won't sit flush, which is both a strength problem and an obvious cosmetic one. Sneaking up on the depth with test cuts in scrap, checking with the actual mating piece, is the standard way to get this right rather than trusting a single setup.
