Butt Joint

A butt joint is two pieces of wood joined with their flat, unmodified faces or edges simply pressed together — no interlocking geometry, no mechanical shape doing any of the work. It's the joint everyone discovers first, because it requires no layout and no specialized cut. It's also, on its own, the weakest common joint in woodworking, and understanding exactly why is what makes the rest of joinery make sense.

Why it's weak

An end-grain-to-face-grain butt joint (the most common case — a rail butted against a leg, a shelf butted against a side panel) glues poorly because end grain is mostly hollow fiber tubes soaking up glue like a straw, rather than bonding to it the way long grain does. The joint has zero mechanical interlock, so the entire connection depends on a glue bond that's already working against a bad surface. Stress concentrates right at the joint line with nothing else sharing the load.

Where it's actually fine

A face-grain-to-face-grain butt joint — two boards edge-glued into a wider panel — is a completely different situation, and a good one: long grain bonds to long grain extremely well, which is exactly why edge gluing whole panels from a butt joint is standard practice, not a compromise. The weakness is specific to end grain, not to the butt joint concept itself.

Reinforcing an end-grain butt joint

Because the glue bond alone isn't trustworthy on end grain, a butt joint almost always gets mechanical help: pocket screws (pocket hole joinery), dowels (dowel joinery), biscuits (biscuit joinery), or a loose tenon like a Domino all add real mechanical connection to what would otherwise be glue doing all the work on a poor gluing surface. Picking one of these instead of a bare butt joint is usually the actual decision being made when someone says a project "needs joinery" — the butt joint is the default; everything else is reinforcing it or replacing it.
