Buying a Band Saw: Resaw Capacity Is the Whole Story

A band saw drives a continuous toothed blade loop around two or three wheels, and it does two jobs almost nothing else does well: resawing thick stock into thinner slices, and cutting curves that a table saw simply can't. If either of those is why you're buying one, most of the other specs are secondary.

Resaw height is the number that matters

"Resaw height" is the maximum distance between the table and the upper blade guide — effectively, the thickest board you can stand on edge and slice through. A saw with 6" of resaw height can't touch 8" stock no matter how good everything else about it is. If resawing wide boards into veneer or bookmatched panels is part of the plan, check this number before anything else.

Wheel size and the tradeoffs it drives

Bigger wheels generally mean more resaw capacity and smoother blade tracking, but also a larger, heavier machine. 14" saws are the common "serious hobbyist" size and, with a riser block installed, often reach 12"+ of resaw height — a good middle ground for most home shops without moving into full stationary-saw territory.

Motor power for resawing specifically

Resawing is slow, high-resistance cutting through a lot of material — underpowered saws bog down or wander off the line in thick hardwood. If resawing is a real priority, don't buy the smallest motor option to save money; it's the spec most likely to actually frustrate you.

Blade width and what it's for

  • Narrow blades (1/8"–1/4") cut tight curves — the reason to own a band saw for scrollwork or curved parts.
  • Wide blades (1/2"–1") track straighter and resist drift, which is what you want for resawing and straight ripping.

Most saws can run either, but you'll be swapping blades between curve-cutting and resaw sessions — budget for at least one of each.

The one thing that undermines everything else

Blade tension and tracking setup matter more on a band saw than almost any other machine — a poorly tensioned or badly tracked blade will drift off a straight line regardless of how capable the saw is on paper. Learn to set drift angle and tension properly before blaming the machine for a wandering cut.
